Description

Local Landmark Designation for the Building at 509 Oswald Street (bh)

Summary

Toledo is considering local landmark designation for Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 509 Oswald Street. The City of Toledo is the applicant, and the Toledo Catholic Diocese owns the 1.8-acre property. Built between 1900 and 1906, the church is a German Gothic Romanesque structure featuring Sandusky limestone, copper towers and domes, and Munich-imported stained glass depicting the life of Christ. It is historically associated with Toledo’s German community and East Toledo’s development. Staff recommends approval because of the church’s architectural, cultural, and historical significance. If designated, exterior changes would require review by the City Historic District Commission through Certificates of Appropriateness, adding preservation oversight while future use remains undecided.
