SJPD hired 116 officers but had 106 vacancies in FY 2025-26

San Jose’s Public Safety, Finance and Strategic Support Committee accepted the Police Department’s FY 2025-26 recruitment and hiring report. The department hired 116 police recruits and lateral officers from 3,135 applications, but had 106 sworn vacancies and 897 street-ready officers as of June 26, 2026. Recruiting spending exceeded budget, including $3.59 million in personnel costs and $1.05 million in overtime. The department reported 120 separations and said 38 vacancies were beyond its projection.
