San Jose plans phased ban on drinking water for nonfunctional turf

San Jose plans to ban potable-water irrigation of nonfunctional turf on covered properties under California’s AB 1572, with rules beginning January 1, 2027. The phased deadlines apply to public properties, commercial and industrial sites, institutions, and homeowners’ association and similar common areas. The council is scheduled to consider the ordinance October 27; San Jose Water Company supports it and asks for uniform citywide enforcement across all three water systems.
