Richmond Thrives Grants Program: A New Competitive Grantmaking Process

Summary

Richmond Thrives replaces the City’s previous annual nonprofit grant process with a competitive model administered by selected local grantmakers. Created after feedback from City Council, the administration, and nonprofits, it aims to improve transparency, applicant support, accessibility, review fairness, and funding speed while protecting taxpayer resources. FY27 grants address four areas: arts and culture, children and families, economic mobility, and health. Grantmakers review applications with community input and may not favor organizations based on size, history, or prior funding. Applications close in September 2026, with awards and disbursements expected from late 2026 into early 2027. The City sets priorities, prevents duplicate funding, monitors results, and reports to Council.
